Knights Hill Road, New London

C.O.R.E., (an acronym for Conservation, Open-space, Recreation, Environment), represented the alliance of four local organizations to purchase 55 acres of undeveloped open space including 2,469 feet of road frontage along Knights Hill Road. Working cooperatively, the four groups brought different skills and knowledge to the C.O.R.E. project. Ausbon Sargent provided organizational and fundraising leadership, the New London Conservation Commission appropriated $20,000 for the project, the Knights Hill Nature Park conducted a natural resource inventory, and the New London Outing Club was responsible for hiring the land planner and environmental consultant. The wonderful result of this cooperation was successfully meeting the $150,000 fund raising goal to purchase the land and then to create the conservation easement to permanently limit the use of the property to recreational and forestry purposes. The New London Outing Club holds the deed to the property and conveyed the conservation easement on the C.O.R.E. land to the New London Conservation Commission. Ausbon Sargent is the backup grantee.
