Dorothy Birmingham Gordon

Dorothy Birmingham Gordon passed away peacefully on April 22, 2019 at the age of 103.  Although Dot was born in Passaic, NJ and lived a great deal of her adult life in New York, she had been a summer resident of New London since 1941 and moved to New London permanently in 1980.

Dot’s husband of 59 years, Frank H. Gordon, died in February of 2000.  Dot and Frank were very active in their community and the environment around their town.  They demonstrated their true love for the Mt. Kearsarge/Ragged/Lake Sunapee region in 1992 when they protected 19.59 acres of property along Lake Sunapee.  In 1996 they donated a conservation easement to The Ausbon Sargent Land Preservation Trust on their 43-acre New London property, located on Davis Hill Road, for a total of 63 acres and 3,000 feet of Lake Sunapee shoreline between the two properties.

Dot remained very active, well beyond the age of 84, after the passing of her husband.  She enjoyed playing tennis, hiking, climbing mountains, skiing and canoeing.  Her love of the area always remained strong and it was important to her that others be able to enjoy the beauty of our area, as well.  In December of 2006, Dot made a gift to the Otter Pond Protective Association of her 7.8-acre property that includes the Otter Pond Beach.  This gift was made with the understanding that the beach would continue to be open to the public as it had been throughout the years that she and Frank owned it.

Dot Gordon was a special friend to many people and to many groups that benefitted from her service.  Her legacy and that of her family will continue to live beyond their years.
