Bequest - leaving a living legacy:
A bequest is a wonderful way to create a lasting land legacy. Bequest provisions in a will and/or a revocable living trust allow a donor to determine the final distribution in his or her estate and will help Ausbon Sargent continue to protect rural landscapes. Bequests come in several forms:

General bequest: With a general bequest you simply leave a specified dollar amount to Ausbon Sargent. The suggested wording is:
"I give, devise, and bequeath to the Ausbon Sargent Land Preservation Trust, a non-profit organization, with its office at 71 Pleasant Street, in New London, NH, the sum of $____________, to be used for its general purposes."

Specific bequest: With such a bequest, the donor designates that Ausbon Sargent will receive a specific piece of property. The suggested wording is:
"I give, devise, and bequeath to the Ausbon Sargent Land Preservation Trust, a non-profit organization, with its office at 71 Pleasant Street, in New London, NH, ____________ (describe any real or personal property), to be used for its general purposes."

If you bequeath land, it does not have to have significant conservation value. Ausbon Sargent can sell your property and use the income to further our land protection work. A variation of this technique is if your land does have important conservation values, we can place restrictions on your land then sell your property. These restrictions protect your land and Ausbon Sargent guarantees enforcement of the restrictions.

Bequest of a conservation easement: A Conservation Easement can be donated by your will. However, it is important that a donor consult first with Ausbon Sargent to assure that that a donor’s conservation goals can be met. There are important technical details in drafting a conservation easement and donors should be aware of Ausbon Sargent’s monitoring endowment policy.

Residuary bequests: In a residuary bequest, the donor leaves all or a part of the balance of their estate to a beneficiary after all or the specific bequests have been satisfied. The suggested wording is:
"I give, devise, and bequeath to the Ausbon Sargent Land Preservation Trust, a non-profit organization, with its office at 71 Pleasant Street, in New London, NH, all (or___%) of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate, to be used for its general purposes."

Contingent bequests: A contingent bequest provides for the disposition of an estate if one or more of the named beneficiaries fails to survive the donor. The suggested wording:
"If ______________ predeceases me or disclaims any interest in _____________, I hereby bequeath his or her share to the Ausbon Sargent Land Preservation Trust, a non-profit organization, with its office at 71 Pleasant Street, in New London, NH, to be used for its general purposes."

Through, a bequest, you can:
• Provide for the future of Ausbon Sargent;
• Possibly reduce the tax burden on your estate;
• Permanently link your name to Ausbon Sargent through the creation of an endowed fund.

Gift of stock:
Did you know that you could realize substantial tax savings by donating appreciated stocks to Ausbon Sargent? For securities held more than one year, you may claim a charitable deduction for the full fair market value, not the purchase price. And, you pay no capital gains tax. Your gift of appreciated securities will help preserve the rural character of the Kearsarge/Sunapee region; as well as provide you with the tax advantages of a charitable gift.

When a stock splits or you receive dividends in additional shares, your portfolio contains so-called "odd lots." Some of our members choose stock to fund their annual membership gift.

If you wish to give stock, please notify your broker in writing that you are making a charitable gift to the Ausbon Sargent Land Preservation Trust and instruct them to contact us. When your broker calls, we will instruct him/her to transfer the stock into our account.

IRA assets:
Who will receive the assets remaining in your IRA after your lifetime? Assets in your IRA are part of your estate. If left to individuals other than your spouse, they are subject to estate tax. Unlike other assets, they are also subject to income tax when distributed to your heirs. If you name a charity such as Ausbon Sargent as beneficiary, all taxes are generally avoided. If you would like to provide for Ausbon Sargent in your estate plans, please tell us about it.

Life Insurance:
A life insurance policy no longer needed for family security often makes a very good charitable gift. If you no longer need your life insurance policy for its intended purpose or protection, consider giving the policy to Ausbon Sargent.

By naming Ausbon Sargent as owner and irrevocable beneficiary, you are entitled to an income tax charitable deduction for the value of the policy at the time of transfer. The value of a fully paid up policy is its replacement cost. If the policy is not fully paid up, its value is approximately equal to its cash surrender value. Continued payment of the premium is also deductible by you when the premiums are paid directly to Ausbon Sargent.

Memorial and honorary gifts: Friends may choose to make a gift in honor or memory of someone. Simply indicate who your gift is in honor/memory of and the name and address of the person you would like us notify of your gift.
